Water Softener vs. Water Filter: Which One Do You Need?
"Do I need a softener or a filter?" is one of the questions we hear most. The short answer: they fix different problems, and many homes in South Florida need both.
What a water softener does
A water softener removes the hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, that cause:
Spots on dishes and shower glass
Scale on faucets and inside appliances
Soap that does not lather
Stiff laundry
A softener does not change how water tastes or smells.
What a water filter does
A filter targets taste, smell and appearance. Depending on the type, it can address:
A chlorine or chloramine taste on city water (chlorine taste and smell)
A rotten egg smell on well water (sulfur smell)
Orange staining from iron (iron staining)
A filter does not soften water.
Quick guide
If you notice... | You likely need... |
Spots, scale, poor lather | A water softener |
Chlorine taste or smell | Carbon filtration |
Rotten egg smell or orange stains | Iron and sulfur treatment |
Better drinking water at the kitchen tap | Under-sink reverse osmosis |
Several of the above | A combined system |
Why many homes need both
South Florida water often comes with hardness plus another issue, such as chlorine on city water or iron and sulfur on well water. A combined setup treats each problem with the right tool.
