Why Your Tap Water Smells Like Chlorine in South Florida

If your tap water smells a little like a swimming pool, you are not imagining it. Many homes on city water in Palm Beach and Broward County notice it, especially first thing in the morning or after a utility flush.

Why city water smells like chlorine

Utilities add a disinfectant to keep water safe as it travels through miles of pipe to your home. That disinfectant is what you smell and taste. The amount can change during the year, and some utilities periodically switch to stronger treatment for a few weeks.

Chlorine vs. chloramine

Many South Florida utilities use chloramine, a mix of chlorine and ammonia that lasts longer in the pipes. It is harder to notice than plain chlorine, but also harder to remove. A filter designed only for chlorine may not fully handle chloramine. That is why it matters which one your utility uses before you choose a filter.

Where you notice it most

  • Drinking water and coffee that taste "off"

  • A strong smell in the shower

  • Hair and skin that feel dry after bathing

  • Ice cubes with a chemical taste
