Hard Water in Your Shower: Spots, Soap Scum and That Dry Feeling
The shower is where most people first notice hard water. The glass never looks clean, there is a ring of soap scum that keeps coming back, and you step out feeling like you need more lotion than you should.
Why the shower shows it first
Hot water and soap make hardness minerals easier to see. As shower water dries, it leaves calcium and magnesium behind on glass, tile and fixtures. Those same minerals react with soap to form the sticky film we call soap scum.
What hard water does in the shower
White spots and haze on glass doors
Chalky scale around the showerhead and drain
Soap scum on tile, tubs and grout
Shampoo and body wash that do not lather well
Skin that feels tight and hair that feels dull or heavy
What our customers notice after softening
Many homeowners tell us their shower is easier to keep clean, they use less soap and shampoo, and their skin and hair feel softer after switching to softened water. Every home and every person is different, so we always start with a test. You can read more, including a customer's story, on our dry skin and hair page.
Chlorine can play a part too
If you are on city water, the shower may also smell of chlorine. That is a separate issue from hardness, and it is handled with filtration rather than softening. See our chlorine taste and smell page.
How to fix it
A properly sized water softener treats water before it reaches the shower. For homes that want treated water everywhere, whole house reverse osmosis is another option.
