Do I Need a Whole House Reverse Osmosis System?

Whole house reverse osmosis gets a lot of attention, and for some homes it is the right answer. For many others, a simpler setup does the job. Here is how to tell the difference.

What whole house RO does

An under-sink RO system treats water at one kitchen tap for drinking and cooking. A whole house reverse osmosis system treats water before it reaches every faucet, shower and appliance in the home. It is a bigger system, with pretreatment, storage and a pump, and it needs regular care.

Signs whole house RO may make sense

  • Your water has high total dissolved solids that a softener alone does not address

  • You are on a well with several issues at once, such as hardness, iron and odor

  • You want treated water at every tap, not just the kitchen

  • Earlier systems have not fixed the problem

When something simpler may be enough

If your main concern is spots and scale, a water softener may be all you need. If it is the taste of your drinking water, an under-sink system like the Kinetico K5 or A200 is often the better fit. See how our Kinetico systems compare.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. What did a water test actually find?

  2. Where will the equipment go, and how much space does it need?

  3. What maintenance does it need, and who handles it?

  4. Would a softener or filter solve the problem with less equipment?

Start with the water, not the system

The right answer depends on what is in your water and what you want from it. A free water test gives us the facts before anyone recommends equipment.
