Common Water Softener Problems and When to Call a Pro

Most water softener problems are small and easy to fix if you catch them early. Here are the ones we see most often in Palm Beach and Broward homes.

1. Spots and scale are coming back

Likely causes: the salt ran out, a salt bridge formed, settings no longer match your water, or the system is undersized for your household.

2. Salt bridging

A hard crust forms in the salt tank, leaving an empty space underneath. The salt looks full, but the system cannot use it. Humidity in South Florida garages makes this more common.

3. Low water pressure

Likely causes: clogged pre-filters, sediment or iron buildup, or a system that is too small for your water flow. Pressure problems can also come from the well pump. See pump repair and replacement.

4. Water tastes salty

This can mean the system is not rinsing properly after it regenerates, or there is a problem with a valve or drain line.

5. Salt level never goes down

If salt is not being used, the system may not be regenerating at all.

6. The system runs at odd times or constantly

Settings, a power issue on electric models, or a worn part can cause irregular cycles.

When to call a pro

Topping up salt and breaking up a light salt bridge are fine to do yourself. For anything involving valves, settings, leaks or pressure, it is safer to have the system checked. We service softeners and other water treatment equipment, and we can tell you whether a repair or a new system makes more sense.
